George Freundlich
Dr. George Valentine Freundlich is a retired medical doctor, musician and philanthropist from Matheson, Ontario.
For his commitment to medicine, in 2008, Dr. George Freundlich was honored with the prestigious Council Award by the College of Physicians and Surgeons for his commitment, dedication and absolutely outstanding care for his patients. Only 4 other awards of this stature exist and it is equivalent to Physician of the Year.
As a teacher and mentor, Dr. Freundlich was a part of the Academic Staff at The Northern School of Medicine (Laurentian Medical School ) in Sudbury. He also served as Academic Staff for French speaking students at The University of Ottawa Medical School.
As the former Medical Director, Chief of Staff and Active Staff Emeritus at Bingham Memorial Hospital, Dr. Freundlich performed emergency room coverage and acute, chronic, palliative and geriatric care. In addition to his extremely busy hospital duties he also practiced out of his private clinics 5 days a week.
Dr. Freundlich is both a proud Canadian and Romanian. He arrived to Canada in 1985. Prior to arriving, he received his BA in Fine Arts with a specialization in classical music, violin, piano and trombone. After qualifying in classical music, he turned his focus to medicine and graduated from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj, Romania in 1982.
Upon arriving in Canada, he successfully completed the medical evaluating exams for foreign graduates at The Medical Council of Canada in Montreal EN FRANCAIS. In 1989, he officially received Canadian Citizenship, and shortly after, he became Newfoundland’s youngest Senior Medical Officer (while working at A.M.Guy Memorial Hospital), the highest qualification a physician can achieve.
As a career musician and after 25 years, in 2019, Dr. Freundlich retired from the award winning Timmins Symphony Orchestra (trombone) and continues to play with the Timmins All Star Big Band (trombone, saxophone). In 2005, he received an Award of Appreciation for 10 years of dedicated and valuable contribution to the orchestra.
Since 1995, Dr. Freundlich has been a proud Rotarian, doing his share in improving the lives of children in Africa and helping disadvantaged students in Canada. He regularly makes donations to local and international charities, food banks, local museums, the Society of MS and Orchestras Canada. He is a fellow and benefactor of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and writes reviews about many of their performances.
Dr. Freundlich has been awarded with the highly prestigious award “The International Humanitarian, Philanthropist and Cultural Ambassador” by the Government of Romania and Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his humanitarian, philanthropic and cultural work, locally and internationally.
Dr. Freundlich loves travelling around the world and is an active globe trotter. He has visited over 100 countries on all 7 continents and enjoys sharing photographs from his trips.
