Dr. George Valentine Freundlich is a retired medical doctor, musician and philanthropist. He is also a fellow and member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. A very proud Canadian and a very proud Romanian, (he states that this is not a contradiction and a person can be both), Dr. Freundlich lives in Matheson, Ontario, Canada.
In 2008, Dr. George Freundlich was honored with the prestigious “Council Award” (equivalent to Physician of the Year 2008) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for his tremendous commitment, unparalleled dedication and absolutely stellar care for his patients. Only five such awards are presented each year.
As a teacher, mentor and motivator, Dr. Freundlich was a part of the Academic Staff at The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (Laurentian Medical School) in Sudbury. He also served as Academic Staff for the French language students at The University of Ottawa Medical School.
As the former Medical Director, Chief of Staff and Active Staff Emeritus at Bingham Memorial Hospital, Dr. Freundlich performed emergency room coverage and acute, chronic, palliative and geriatric care. In addition to his extremely busy hospital duties, he also practiced out of his private clinics five days a week.
Born, raised and educated in Romania, Dr. Freundlich received his BA in Fine Arts with a specialization in classical music, violin, piano and trombone. At the time he completed his studies, he had mastered three musical instruments. After qualifying in classical music, he turned his focus to medicine and graduated from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj, Romania in 1982 with a perfect 10. In 1985, he came to Canada.
Upon arriving in Canada, he successfully completed the medical evaluating exams for foreign graduates at The Medical Council of Canada in Montreal "en Francais". In 1989, he officially received Canadian Citizenship, and shortly after, at age 34 he became Newfoundland’s youngest Senior Medical Officer, the highest qualification a physician can achieve. He was practicing at that time at the Dr. A.M. Guy Memorial Hospital in Buchans.
As a career musician and after 25 years, in 2019, Dr. Freundlich retired from the award winning Timmins Symphony Orchestra (trombone). He continues to perform with the Timmins All Star Big Band (trombone, saxophone). In 2005, he received an Award of Appreciation for 10 years of dedicated and valuable contribution to the orchestra.
Since 1995, Dr. Freundlich has been a proud Rotarian, doing his share in improving the lives of children in Africa and helping disadvantaged students in Canada. He regularly makes donations to local and international charities, food banks, local museums, the Society of MS, The Fellowship of Christians and Jews and Orchestras Canada. He is a Fellow & Benefactor of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and writes reviews about many of their performances. He is also a dedicated philanthropist in his native Romania.
Dr. Freundlich has been awarded with the highly prestigious award, The International Humanitarian, Philanthropist and Cultural Ambassador, by the Government of Romania and Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his humanitarian, philanthropic and cultural activity locally and internationally.
Dr. Freundlich loves travelling around the world and is an active globe trotter. He has visited over 100 countries on all seven continents and enjoys sharing photographs from his trips.
